SAA Performance Descriptors
The SAA Performance Descriptors were developed by the SAA Teacher Development Committee in collaboration with DR. Robert Duke and copyrighted by the SAA in 1998. Of course, they are not the only things that inform our vision of a student as an accomplished performer, but they are valuable tools for assessing students’ progress through the process of gradual mastery and refinement.
Use the following descriptors to help you evaluate teacher and student performances:
Repertoire
The technical and interpretive demands of the selection(s) are commensurate with performer’s technical and musical abilities
Technical Accuracy
Plays correct notes. Intonation is accurate. Tempo is appropriate. Musical pulse is steady, yet varies when appropriate (e.g., rubato, retard). The rhythm is accurate and precise
Focus of Attention
Performance conveys a sense of concentration. Performance conveys a sense of confidence
Physical Aspects
Demonstrates balance and erect posture. Demonstrates ease of movement and efficient motion (e.g., no unnecessary tension evident). Appears physically comfortable.
Musicianship
Dynamics are varied to create an expressive effect. Notes are articulated appropriately and consistently. Creates motion in the melodic line (phrase shape, rise, and fall). Phrases end gracefully (e.g., tapered dynamics, ending notes sustained). Performance is consistent with stylistic convention
Tone Production

PRACTICE DAILY WITH FOCUS. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY
