SAA Performance Descriptors

The SAA Performance Descriptors were developed by the SAA Teacher Development Committee in collaboration with DR. Robert Duke and copyrighted by the SAA in 1998.  Of course, they are not the only things that inform our vision of a student as an accomplished performer, but they are valuable tools for assessing students’ progress through the process of gradual mastery and refinement.

Use the following descriptors to help you evaluate teacher and student performances:

Repertoire

The technical and interpretive demands of the selection(s) are commensurate with performer’s technical and musical abilities

Technical Accuracy

Plays correct notes.  Intonation is accurate.  Tempo is appropriate.  Musical pulse is steady, yet varies when appropriate (e.g., rubato, retard). The rhythm is accurate and precise

Focus of Attention

Performance conveys a sense of concentration.  Performance conveys a sense of confidence

Physical Aspects

Demonstrates balance and erect posture.  Demonstrates ease of movement and efficient motion (e.g., no unnecessary tension evident).  Appears physically comfortable.

Musicianship

Dynamics are varied to create an expressive effect.  Notes are articulated appropriately and consistently.  Creates motion in the melodic line (phrase shape, rise, and fall).  Phrases end gracefully (e.g., tapered dynamics, ending notes sustained).  Performance is consistent with stylistic convention

Tone Production

The tone is pleasing, resonant, and full.  The tone varies when appropriate.  Uses vibrato as appropriate

Stage Presence

Demonstrates appropriate poise and bearing.  Acknowledges fellow performers (if applicable).  In the event of an error, continues without pause
